Located just east of Reno, Sparks is a city located in Washoe County, Nevada. Population density in the Sparks area remained low until the Southern Pacific Railroad built a switch yard there in 1904. The city that sprung up around that time was named Harriman after E.H. Harriman, president of the Southern Pacific. Shortly after, it was renamed Sparks after then Governor of Nevada, John Sparks. Sparks remained a fairly small town until the 1950s, when rapid economic growth in Reno triggered the expansion of Sparks as an economic and residential center. In 1984, the Nugget Casino Resort was built in Sparks, the city’s first and only high-rise casino.
Contemporary Sparks remains true to the city that initially sprung up over 50 years ago. The area north of the railroad remains a residential area, with a strong sense of community and very family-centered values.
